The calendar of honour

Elite marriage is a sequence, not a feeling. Skip a step and the city will supply the missing scene as rumour.

Waiting as law and as theatre

Iddah (and the mourning dress of ihdad for a widow) is Islamic law with a social audience. Four months and ten days is not only grief. It is a public clock. When it ends, colour becomes a decision. People will have opinions about how soon a visit is still condolence and when it has become something else.

A seventh-day gathering runs on grief and zobo. The city comes to look. Some come because they loved the dead. Some come because it is required. Some come to see what a widow looks like up close. She receives all of them with the same composed warmth. Giving anyone the satisfaction of her face is a kind of defeat.

The sequence

Goro and sweets can arrive weeks before a wedding invitation — a cream card with gold lettering, delivered by hand, feeling like a summons. Tambaya is the asking, properly, families facing each other. Nikah is the contract, which can be quiet. Walima is the public feast. Budan kai is the morning unveiling in the groom’s family house, often with the new household’s perfume and humra oil.

Lefe is the trousseau: perfume in velvet, oils, cloth, sometimes the objects that say this family knows how to receive a bride. Modern elite additions — a car key, a honeymoon to Istanbul, a deed of land in her name — sit on top of the old sequence. They do not replace it. A land title without the uncle’s four words is just paper.

When the city wants twelve months

A long engagement is not always romance. It is time for other people to work. Vendors, “the family’s standing,” a former wife who would like a year to manoeuvre. The counter-move, in some houses, is speed: if someone wants more time, give them no time at all. A quiet nikah can be both piety and strategy.

Secret marriage among the elite is not a Western elopement. It is a fact held by a small circle while the public calendar continues to show courtship. The difficulty is not the secret. It is the weight of joy that cannot be shared.
