What was wrong, and what we changed

  • Spine. The original wrap was built for 358 cream pages (0.895"). The corrected interior is 349 pages. This file uses 0.8725" so KDP’s calculator matches. Front, back, and the ISBN barcode are untouched.
  • Barcode. Your existing ISBN (978-978-688-524-7) stays. It sits on a white pad, more than 0.25" from the spine and trim. The pad is a hair under KDP’s 1.4" minimum width — if Amazon flags it they will restamp it; we are not covering it with a blank square.
  • Already fine. 8.75" height with 0.125" bleed, 300 DPI, flattened raster, no crop marks or password. Spine text is allowed (349 pages is over 79).
  • On KDP. Paperback → 5.5" × 8.5" → black and white ink → cream paper → upload this cover and the corrected interior. Do not switch to white paper without a new spine.

Interior

Applied in the compiled book

  • Body style is justified, last line left — not distributed.
  • Chapter Sixteen numbering restored (VI / VII). Fina’s waiting heading is split from the opening sentence.
  • Duplicate leftover lines removed (uncle’s warning, “twenty-one / idiots,” Rufa’i’s niece).
  • Remaining American doubles converted to British singles. Fina’s missing quotes and “Ya de” restored.
  • Glossary: iddah and ihdad are separate entries; Maama / Mama; Tawaf sits on the same line as its definition.
  • The EPUB carries the same edits. It reflows; it is not a page-for-page copy of the paperback.

Page numbers in the footer start at 1 on Chapter One. Contents is rebuilt to match this setting. The original title, copyright, and dedication pages are kept.

If you are patching the original file instead

One style change that fixes the stretched lines

Several short beats in the interior (“The line connected.” “His was silver.” “She felt peace.” and the Tuesday cadence at the end of Chapter Twenty-Two) are force-justified across the full measure. That is a paragraph-style setting, not bad typing.

In Word: select the body style → Paragraph → Alignment: Justified (not Distributed).

In InDesign: body paragraph style → Justification → uncheck any “Justify last line” / “Full justify” option so the last line of a paragraph aligns left.

After that change, the short beats below will sit as ordinary left-aligned last lines. Still paste the replacement text — a few of those pages have quote and heading errors on the same spread.

    Drop the heading on its own line, then start the body with “Fina was awake.” — capital F, period, paragraph break.
